Residents of Tower Hamlets, East London, were advised to avoid visits to other residences by the local council. In an open letter, the Mayor of the neighbourhood, John Biggs, asked people to avoid visiting other families "unless absolutely necessary" because of the increase in coronavirus cases.
The Tower Hamlets rate for the seven days to September 28 was 44.0 cases per 100,000 people, up from 38.5 the previous week.
Already in some parts of London, levels are less than half, with Bromley reporting just under 20 cases per 100,000 people. And the number of new confirmed cases in Camden, Bexley and Kensington and Chelsea has fallen by 11 per cent.
