Review of the Movie

¨On The Rocks¨ ( Directed by Sofia Coppola / 2020 )

Funny Valentine who's on her Daddy's wave

Was it all about men who by nature dominate women? What does a woman need to keep a man interested in her?

Laura ( Rashida Jones) is a writer living in New York and in creative crisis. Every day she takes care of her two little daughters and tries uselessly to write her book. Her husband David (Marlon Wayans), an executive who is busy traveling and seeking professional success, comes home a little tall and starts kissing her animatedly in bed. When she calls his attention, he stops and decides to go to sleep. She thinks her husband has confused her with someone else and has the worst idea of asking the opinion of her father, the millionaire playboy Felix (Bill Murray).

According to him, she is being betrayed and everything must be investigated. He becomes present again on her everyday life, just like the watch he presents her with on her birthday (an allusion to time), when her husband once again travelled to work.

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, the film, the first fruit of the partnership between Apple and the indie production company A24, manages to be sensitive, delicate and no less interesting. The soundtrack brings the romantic Chet Baker to sweeten the fate that was about to become tragic.

Laura, after embarking on her father's sophisticated and expensive journey, gets the answer. If the end is happy ? It depends on who you've defended since the beginning of the film. I, in particular, believed in the female character. The theory that men only look for asses to gag their penises has become an old story, from her father's sexist times. Should she keep whistling with him? Well, we didn't lose the thread for the question the film wanted to answer till the end: was her father really right?
