The vaccine developed by Pfizer-Biontech was approved for use by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency this morning, before similar decisions in the US and Europe.
Tests have indicated that jab is 95 per cent effective in overall prevention of symptomatic Covid and protects 94 per cent of people over 65.
The UK has guaranteed 40 million doses, enough for 20 million people, with the first 800,000 expected to arrive in a few days.
Sir Simon Stevens, the NHS executive chairman, said the health service was preparing for "the larger scale vaccination campaign.¨
