Boris Johnson said the new levels of coronavirus have an "expiration" clause - or expiry date - of February 3, as he tries to fight the reaction of conservative parliamentarians.

Johnson insisted that the staggered measures for local areas will be reviewed every fortnight:

"After the fourth biweekly review (27 January), the parliament will have another vote on the staggered approach, determining whether the measures will remain in force until the end of March".

Mr Johnson said the first review on 16 December would consider the views of local public health directors, with a final decision on whether any area should change level made in a cabinet committee.
