Cineworld closes all 663 cinemas in its two main markets
Cineworld is the second largest cinema operator in the world and the largest in the UK with 120 sites. It also has the Picturehouse network of smaller spaces
Cineworld should make a direct appeal to the government for support after announcing the temporary closure of all 127 of its Cineworld and Picturehouse cinemas in the UK just over two months after the reopening. Cineworld employed 37,000 people worldwide before the pandemic, with 5,500 in the UK.
Also Cineworld cinemas in the United States, where 546 cinemas operate, may also be forced to close.
Cineworld said in a statement: "We can confirm that we are considering the temporary closure of our UK and US cinemas, but a final decision has not yet been reached.
"As soon as the decision is made, we will update all employees and customers as soon as possible.
In September, the company reported a loss of $1.6 billion (£1.3 billion) in the six months to June, as its cinemas had to close due to lockdown.
