Matt Mullenweg dealing with employees in 77 cities
You can learn a few things from Matt Mullenweg if
you've had to adjust to homework in the last few months. The co-founder of the
WordPress and Automattic website creation platform, his parent company,
Mullenweg lives in Houston while supervising a fully distributed team of about
1,100 employees operating in 77 cities around the world.
Working outside the office, Mullenweg explained, has
"an incredible impact on individuals" and, contrary to what everyone
thinks, enables them to lead richer lives. This, he says, "leads them to
be able to bring more creativity to the work.
"When
you're working at home, and all your colleagues are seeing the results of your
work, if you don't, it's very obvious", asked how companies can track the
productivity of home workers. Mullenweg noted that even in the office
"measuring productivity is really very, very difficult¨.
Would it be much easier to relax in the office than at
home? For him, anyone - or company - can adjust to post-office life if he
tries. "It may works fo everyone, but I've seen people quit before they
got there." And he generates a slight polemic by stating that "where you work and how you work doesn't
really matter ", showing to be oblivious to the traditional working
standard. The most important thing is whether you can create something great
within a period of time.
Another important aspect is to make the meetings worth
the time. As basic strategies for this, he says having a clear agenda, invite the right number of people and nothing
else and make sure there are no distractions or people looking at your phones
are paramount. Mullenweg is also a fan of meetings with some movement. When he
can be in person, he likes to walk and talk. When he is remote, he suggests
that participants get good headphones and meet anywhere.
