Belarus has seen nearly three weeks of protests demanding the resignation of AlexanderLukashenko, the president. Many of the demonstrations are co-ordinated online. One app in particular, Telegram, is frequently used to share inspiring videos and plans for marches. It is not just Belarus. Telegram, with more than 400m monthly users, has been used byManifestantes Black Lives Matter na América, bem como manifestantes antigovernamentais em Hong Kong and Iran. Whereas WhatsApp chats are limited to 256 participants, Telegram’s user-created public channels can host unlimited numbers. Telegram is a free instant chat application, whose content is stored in the cloud and which focuses on the security and speed of information. Telegram’s main attraction is that it is not owned by Tencent or Facebook. The app trumpets its independence from internet titans.
