Six cases of the P1 variant in the UK have been identified in people who have recently returned from Brazil
Scientists from Brazil and the UK estimate that the variant, known as P1, is 1.4 to 2.2 times more transmissible than previous versions of the coronavirus circulating in Manaus, the Amazonian city where it originated.
Almost 70% of Manaus' population had immunity from the first wave of COVID infections last spring, but a wave of reinfections earlier this year caused the city's hospitals to be overwhelmed.
