Millions will probably need a third dose of the vaccine this year as ministers step up plans for booster vaccination against new coronavirus variants

NHS chiefs hope that the extra doses can be given at the same time as winter flu vaccines, as the government accepts that a complementary campaign seems increasingly necessary.

A crucial decision nears which strain to target after a study of over 1,500 people found that the Oxford vaccine may not be able to prevent mild and moderate diseases caused by the South African variant .

It happened when South Africa suspended the launch of the Oxford vaccine for the health team. The country received the first million doses of the vaccine at the end of January.
