NHS chiefs hope that the extra doses can be given at the same time as winter flu vaccines, as the government accepts that a complementary campaign seems increasingly necessary.
A crucial decision nears which strain to target after a study of over 1,500 people found that the Oxford vaccine may not be able to prevent mild and moderate diseases caused by the South African variant .
It happened when South Africa suspended the launch of the Oxford vaccine for the health team. The country received the first million doses of the vaccine at the end of January.
