The sale of traditionally used fireworks to celebrate the New Year will be banned, as will the sale of alcohol outdoors

Angela Merkel today announced a series of stricter blocking measures to try to contain a wave of coronavirus infections.

Most shops will close from Wednesday to January 10 and it was agreed in principle that schools would remain closed during that period.
