Grenadier to save 1,300 jobs in France and Germany

Sir Jim Ratcliffe now plans to build his new version of Land Rover Defender on the European continent

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the chemistry magnate and one of Brexit's billionaire advocates, has turned his back on the UK with plans to build his new version of Land Rover Defender on the continent.

In an affront to hundreds of car workers in South Wales who were led to believe that Sir Jim would at least partially manufacture his Grenadier off-road prototype near an old Ford factory near Bridgend, the head of the Ineos chemical empire decided instead, at an old Mercedes-Benz factory on the Franco-German border.

Sir Jim said that the grenadier would now "combine the robust spirit and British design with the rigour of German engineering".
