President Macron called for a united European response to fight Islamic radicalism

Luigi di Maio thinks of a Patriot Act to defend Europe from future Muslim terrorist attacks

Europe must introduce an American-style Patriot Act, allowing more intrusive surveillance and coordinated policing if it is to prevent attacks by Islamic extremists, Italy's foreign minister told The Times .

While European ministers plan a response to recent assassinations in Nice and Vienna, Luigi di Maio said tougher counter-terrorism measures shared across the continent were vital. Austria admitted to making "intolerable mistakes" in failing to contain the arms attack in the capital on Monday, in which four people died and 23 were hurted.

The Patriot Act of America, introduced after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, authorized increased wiretapping powers and improved data sharing between agencies such as the FBI and the CIA, as well as toughened penalties for acts of terrorism.
