With banners written "ci chiudete, ci pagate", citizens protest in Naples
Hundreds of people are against the curfew imposed in the Campania region from Friday
This Friday evening,23 was marked by clashes in Naples, Italy. Hundreds of people gathered at the San Giovanni Maggiore square to protest against the new restriction measures adopted by the government to contain the coronavirus. Authorities in the Campania region have implemented a curfew and are still not ruling out a new total blockade, known as the lockdown. The restrictions have outraged some citizens, who have organised the acts by the social networks and ignored the rules prohibiting crowding. People, mostly young people, addressed the seat of government chanting against the authorities.
The groups criticised the governor of Campania, Vincenzo de Luca, and the Prime Minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, for the restrictive measures. Moments of tension were recorded when demonstrators held barricades and threw smoke bombs and fireworks at the police, who responded with tear gas. Cases of Covid-19 across Italy have increased seven-fold since the beginning of the month reignited fears that the pandemic is getting out of control again.
