Amazon said yesterday that its sales rose 37 percent in the quarter to a record $96.2 billion (£74.4 billion), generating a profit of $6.3 billion (£4.87 billion), almost three times the profit of the same period last year.

'There is no doubt that Amazon's latest results show that it continues to beat the disruption caused by the pandemic,' said Neil Saunders of research firm GlobalData.

And Facebook reported a 22 percent increase in revenues to £16.6 billion ($21.2 billion) and a 29 percent increase in profits to £6.1 billion ($7.84 billion) as the company continued to benefit people who depend on the internet to stay connected during the pandemic.
