The European Parliament recently voted to rule out compulsory EU-level clock changes, leaving it to national governments to decide. EU member states will be able to choose between staying in the 'permanent summer' or 'permanent winter' period. Depending on what the Republic of Ireland decides, it could end up with a time zone barrier on the British border with Ireland for six months of the year.
