Border checks

Internal chaos is the result of Brexit: companies in the dark and very little useful information has been released about future changes

Last month, the UK government instructed the Department of Agriculture in Northern Ireland to begin building agricultural and food control facilities in its ports "without delay". Subsequently, the Permanent Secretary of Stormont at the Department of Agriculture said it was a "monumental challenge" to have new port controls when the Brexit transition period expires at the end of this year.

Next year there will also be changes in border arrangements in UK ports, particularly at Dover.

Truck drivers entering Kent will need specialised 'access permits' to ensure they have the right documentation to enter the EU.

The Cabinet Office has warned that 7,000 long queues of trucks may form next year if there are not enough companies ready to move in.

Cabinet Minister Lord Theodore Agnew said today that companies are "head over heels" about the changes and need to do more to prepare.
