Currently the country registers few new cases daily. In this context, Chinese President Xi Jinping presented medals on Tuesday to four "heroes" of the health area in a ceremony for hundreds of guests, all wearing masks, at the People's Palace in Beijing's Tiananmen Square (Celestial Peace). At the event Li Wenliang, Wuhan's doctor who warned his colleagues about the emergence of a mysterious respiratory disease, was not mentioned, but was reprimanded by the police and accused of spreading "rumours". His death by covid-19 in February provoked a wave of indignation against the government.
One of the recipients of the medal was Zhong Nanshan, an 83-year-old respiratory specialist who became the face of the battle against the coronavirus in China.
The other three who received the honorary title of "People's Hero" were biochemistry expert Chen Wei, the director of a hospital in Wuhan and a 72-year-old specialist in traditional Chinese medicine.
Quarantine ended in April and there have been no more cases of domestic transmission in Wuhan, where covid-19 emerged late last year or in Hubei province since May.Meanwhile, the virus continues to do damage in other parts of the world. There are over 21 million cases. Countries with South Korea - which seemed to have been successful in fighting the coronavirus - are facing new waves.
It may still take a long time for many countries to feel safe enough to allow agglomerations like the one in Wuhan.
